Description |
||||
NGC6946 is a nearby spiral galaxy (about 10 million light years from Earth) which is highly obscured by interstellar matter of the Milky Way galaxy, as it is quite close to the galactic plane. This galaxy was discovered by William Herschel on September 9, 1798. NGC6946 is rather emarkable in that there have been at least eight supernovae detected in thie galaxy with the latest being SN2004et, a type II supernova discovered on September 27, 2004 by Stefano Moretti. To see an image labeled with SN2004et, click here. This represents the largest number of supernovae found in any galaxy to date. This was the first full scale SSRO image. The data was collected on October 9, 2004 and processed by Rick over the next few days. . |
