The globular cluster Omega Centari or NGC 5139 is located about 15,000 light-years away from Earth. There are an estimated 10 million stars in this cluster that are contained in a roughly spherical shape about 150 light-years in diameter. Omega is the largest and brightest of the globular clusters that exist at the fringe of our Milky Way galaxy. Observers in the Northern Hemishpere rarely see this object as it is usually below or very close to the Southern horizon. |
