NGC1169

NGC1169 is another relatively small (4 arc sec) barred spiral galaxy in the galaxy Perseus.  This galaxy lies around 85 million light years away.  This galaxy has a fairly complex spiral structure that winds around the 17,000 light year wide bar.

There are several other dimmer galaxies in this image.  They are identified in the picture below.

Some of the ring structure of this galaxy is easier seen in the Infrared domain.  This animation (warning, again a fairly large 4.3 mb file) shows a fade from the visual image to the IR image (generated from downloaded WISE data) and back to the visual data.  The inner hole in the gas distribution can easily be seen.  Note also that some of the other galaxies in this image are very bright in the IR domain!
