Sh2-101 is an emission nebula that is located in the constellation Cygnus (near eta Cygni). It lies at a distance of about 8750 light years. It has a diameter of about 9 light years and is being illuminated by the blue star that is near the center of the image. Also shown in this image is the star HD226868, a supergiant around which the X-ray source Cygnus X-1 orbits. Cygnus X-1 is almost certainly a black hole. This system lies at a distance of about 6000 light years. |
