NGC281 is a diffuse red emission nebula located about two degrees east of alpha Cassiopeia associated with the open cluster IC 1590 located near the center of the nebula. Most emission nebulae display a characteristic reddish color due of hydrogen alpha emiisions which are difficult for the human eye to detect without special filters. However, NGC281 is fairly bright, and it is possible appreciate its shape with binoculars in the extremely dark skies. |
